Description |
Although a safe Labour seat, the incoming MP in 2001 saw the constituency's majority slashed by nearly half. This is largely blamed on a reduced turnout as Labour still polled 52 per cent of the vote. Alyn & Deeside returned a trained fire-fighter, Labour's Carl Sargeant, to Cardiff Bay in the 2003 Assembly election. The constituency is in north-east Wales, adjacent to Chester and Merseyside. Like much of north east Wales and north west England, Alyn & Deeside is heavily dependent on manufacturing for employment. The constituency was hit heavily by unemployment during the 1970s and 1980s - particularly following the closure of the Shotton Steelworks. The Broughton plant employs about 6,000 people and is the site where Airbus wings are manufactured. In December 2004, it was announced that the company would be creating jobs as it puts into production a new plane. England striker Michael Owen was born in the constituency, and four-times Prime Minister William Gladstone lived in one of Hawarden's two castles.
