Description Marked off from part of Bexar County in 1876 (and organized in 1890), Deaf Smith was named for Erastus "Deaf" Smith, a partially-deaf scout and soldier who served in the Texas Revolution. Its county seat is Hereford.

The pronunciation of "Deaf", like that of Smith himself, is "Deef". He was the first to reach the Alamo after its fall.
