Description One of the original 23 counties, Bastrop County is named for Felipe Enrique Neri, Baron de Bastrop (actually a commoner named Philip Hendrik Nering Bogel wanted for embezzlement in the Netherlands), an early Dutch settler who assisted Stephen F. Austin in obtaining land grants in Texas. Its county seat is Bastrop.

Before the Congress of the Republic of Texas changed the county name to Bastrop in 1837, it was known as Mina Municipality.
