Description |
Odeska oblast is an oblast' (region) of south-western Ukraine. Its capital is Odesa.
It includes the historical teritory of southern Bessarabia (or Budjak), north of the Danube River, which was annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940 from Romania, in accord with the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.
Important cities (except Odessa itself) include:
* Bilhorod-Dnistrovs'kyi;
* Izmail;
* Illichivs'k;
* Reni
* Yuzhny, Odes'ka oblast', Ukraine.
Significant branches of the province's economy are:
* oil refinery & chemicals processing
* transportation (important sea&river ports, oil pipelines and railway);
* vegetable agriculture and vinery.
The area of the region is 33,300 km�; its population (as of 2004-05-01) is 2.4 million people.
Notable Romanian/Moldovan, Bulgarian and Greek minorities reside in the province.
