Description |
Nunakput (meaning "Our Land" in Inuvialuktun) is the Northwest Territories' northernmost district, encompassing the Arctic coast and islands. Nearly 90 per cent of constituents are Inuvialuit.
Tuktoyaktuk (pop. 870), near the mouth of the Mackenzie River, is the district's major centre, serving as a base for oil and gas exploration in the Beaufort Sea. In winter, it's linked by an ice road to the regional hub of Inuvik. Other communities are subsistence hunting and trapping-based Paulatuk (pop. 294) on the shores of Amundsen Gulf; Holman (pop. 398), renowned for its Inuvialuit prints; and traditional Sachs Harbour (pop. 122), which, at 500 kilometres above the Arctic Circle, is the Northwest Territories' most northerly community.
