Profile
Throsby is a predominately Labor-voting electorate that covers 1,422 sq.km in the southern Illawarra and NSW southern highlands. Along the coast it takes in the suburbs that surround Lake Illawarra in the Wollongong and Shellharbour local government areas, including Port Kembla, Warilla, Albion Park and Dapto. The electorate also extends up the Illawarra Highway through Macquarie Pass to take in Robertson, Moss Vale, Berrima, Bowral and Mittagong.
Background
This electorate was first contested at the 1984 election after the expansion of the House of Representatives. It is named after Charles Throsby, a local pioneer and early settler in the Illawarra district.
Throsby has been a safe Labor seat since its creation. Its two former members are Colin Hollis 1984 to 2001, and former ACTU President Jennie George from 2001 until retiring in 2010. Hollis had previously represented Macarthur 1983-84.
