Description Profile

This electorate covers 205 sq.km, squeezed between Lake Macquarie and the Pacific Ocean, stretching from the southern suburbs of Newcastle to the Central Coast, from Redhead to Budgewoi. Main population centres include Charlestown, Belmont, Swansea and Budgewoi.

Background

This electorate was created on the expansion of the parliament in 1949 and is named after Lieutenant John Shortland, the first European to discover the Hunter River. He was also the first to note the existence of coal deposits.

Shortland has had only three members since its creation, all representing the Labor Party. It was held by Charlie Griffiths 1949-1971, Peter Morris 1972-1998 and current incumbent Jill Hall since 1998.
