The economy is diverse. Both the University of Quebec and a correctional institution are located in Rimouski. The main industries are retail trade and other services. The average family income is $51,288 and unemployment is 12.6 per cent.

According to the 2001 census, the immigrant population is less than one per cent. Almost 97 per cent of the population speaks French as their mother tongue, while 0.4 per cent speak English. Almost 15 per cent of the population has less than a Grade 9 education.

In the redistribution of 2004, 73 per cent of Rimouski-Neigette-et-la-Mitis was combined with 37 per cent from Kamouraska-Rivière-du-Loup-Témiscouata-Les Basques. The riding was renamed Rimouski-Témiscouata, a name it had held from 1980 to 1996. This riding was established as Rimouski in 1867. The 1996 redistribution kept 74 per cent of the riding and added 27 per cent from Matapédia-Matane. The name was changed to Rimouski-Mitis by a private member's bill and to Rimouski-Neigette-et-la-Mitis in 2000.

Population: 84,557

NOTE: Known as "Rimouski-Témiscouata" throughout the 2004 election, this riding's name was changed to "Rimouski-Neigette-Témiscouata-Les Basques" directly afterwards. The new name is said to be a more accurate reflection of the area.
