ABC World News Tonight
ABC World News Tonight is the flagship evening news program for the American Broadcasting Company. It was launched on July 10, 1978 with three anchors: Frank Reynolds reporting from Washington, Peter Jennings reporting from London and Max Robinson reporting from Chicago. In 1983, Canadian reporter Peter Jennings assumed the sole anchor position and has since then moved ABC World News Tonight to either equal or surpass its NBC and CBS competitors in ratings. In the 1990s and early 2000s, ABC World News Tonight was engaged in the longest stretch of fierce battle against NBC Nightly News for ratings.
Before ABC World News Tonight, ABC's flagship evening news program was the ABC Evening News hosted by Harry Reasoner and Howard K. Smith. It debut in December of 1970. Reasoner became sole anchor in 1975 and then paired with the first female news anchor in the nation, Barbara Walters, in 1976. ABC Evening News was replaced after viewership declined overwhelmingly.
