Description |
The Federation is one two autonomous entities or proto-nations that make up the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the other being the Republika Srpska. Each entity or proto-nation has its own president and parliament, sharing an army and capital city (Sarajevo). The two entities are separated by the Inter-Entity Boundary Line (IEBL), a boundary created as a result of the 1994 Washington Agreement, which settled the Bosnian War.
Each proto-nation shares titular control over the Brčko District (a shared dominium called a condominium). The Brčko District however is itself (in practice) an autonomous entity and operates on its own.
The Federation divided itself into 10 cantons, out of which five are Bosniak-dominated, three Bosnian Croat-dominated and the remainder mixed.
