Church of England
Mother Church of the Anglican Communion
In the 1530s, King Henry VIII wished to obtain a divorce from Queen Catherine of Aragon. The Pope would not grant it. After a long campaign to reverse this decision, the King ran out of patience and proclaimed himself Supreme Head of the Church of England and the Church began its separate existence from Rome, although, its bishops have been consecrated in unbroken succession from St Peter. The Church of England still proclaims itself a catholic Church.
The Church of England is the Mother Church of the Anglican Communion worldwide. It is led by the Monarch of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland who is Supreme Governor of the Church of England. The Supreme Head of the Church of England is advised by the Prime Minister of British Parliament in all matters pertaining to the national faith. The Church of England and the Anglican Communion is led by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Primate of South England. Second in command is the Archbishop of York, the Primate of North England.
Holding the titles of "Lords Spiritual," both the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, along with 24 senior bishops, serve concurrently in the House of Lords as voting members of the British Parliament.
