Description The county and city of Denver Colorado have been consolidated since 1902 and serve as the state’s capital. It is the state's most populous city and county with 153 square miles of territory, 53 miles of which houses the largest airport in the United States. The nickname "Mile High City" is based on the fact that the elevation is 5,280 feet, precisely one mile. With 300 sunny days per year, low humidity in the summer months and mild winters, many outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to its unique climate. Denver has a mayor and a thirteen member council representing 11 districts. The Denver county court is comprised of divisions which include criminal, civil, juvenile, traffic, probation, small claims, probate, warrants and bonding with seventeen judges and fifteen magistrates. Law enforcement is handled by both a city police department and a county sheriffs department which operates Denver’s central jail.
