Description |
The Krymskiy Federal District was created upon the official incorporation of the Crimea into the Federation on March 21, 2014.
It combined with the dissolved Federal District of Yuzhny (Southern) on July 28, 2016 to strengthen its reach and the district's size.
The abolished Yuzhny (Southern) Federal District was originally called the North Caucasian Federal District in May 2000, then renamed the 'Southern' on June 21, 2000. The new Southern Federal District was then split in two on January 19, 2010, its southern half broken off to form the new North Caucasian (Severo-Kavkazskiy) Federal District.
Contained within this federal district are three republics (Crimea, Kalmykia, Adygea), three oblasti (Rostov, Volgograd, Astrakhan), one krai (Krasnodar) and one federal city (Sevastopol).
