The Prime Minister is appointed by Amiri decree and serves as head of government for four years, unlimited renewal. The Prime Minister is traditionally the State of Kuwait's Crown Prince.
The first Prime Minister of Kuwait was also the 1st Emir of the State of Kuwait, Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah. He appointed himself Prime Minister on January 17, 1962.
The Prime Minister forms the Cabinet of Kuwait, which is the chief executive body of the State of Kuwait. The appointment of a new Cabinet requires the approval of the National Assembly.
