| Description |
Union Territory established out of the former State of Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019 by Act of Parliament of India.
Ladakh was a part of the Tibetan Kushan Empire for centuries and a center of Buddhism subject to raids and encroachments from neighboring Muslim empires.
Ladakh's support of Bhutan in its battles with Tibet in the late 1600s resulted in the Tibet–Ladakh–Bhutan war of 1679–1684.
Ladakh was absorbed into the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir in 1834 and administered by the British Raj until relinquished by treaty to the new Indian nation in 1947.
