36-seat upper house of the bicameral parliament of Jammu and Kashmir.
Per the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act signed into law on August 9, 2019, the Legislative Council will be officially abolished on October 31, 2019.
The body has effectively ceased to function since the lower house was dissolved on November 21, 2018. The body let out the following "closing" statement: "The Upper House is not subject to dissolution but as nearly as possible one-third of the members thereof retire as soon as may be on the expiration of every second year in accordance with the provisions made in this behalf."
