Description |
Self-declared independent country since May 18, 1991 consisting of thirteen regions formally called British Somaliland.
Territory broke away from the control of the Federal Government of Somalia when the dictatorship of Siad Barre collapsed in 1991.
Though unrecognized by any other nation, Somaliland remains relatively peaceful, its economy efficient and its government functional relative to its neighbors.
Isolation has impeded the flow of aid and banking services. The Republic depends on remittances from the large Somali diaspora.
