Description The name "Artsakh" is derived from an ancient region historian Strabo called "Orchistene," where the Artsakh Republic is located today. The original name of the region was 'Karabakh', a territory at first incorporated into Armenia S.S.R on April 1, 1920, and recognized as part of Armenia by the Azerbaijan S.S.R. Revolutionary Committee on April 2, 1920.

Russian Soviet authorities later objected after anti-Soviet rebels took control of the region. The rebels declared it the Republic of Syunik on April 2, 1921. The Soviets moved to forcibly extinguish the rebellion, leaving instead an 'autonomous' land called Nagorno-Karabakh within the Azerbaijan S.S.R.

When the Supreme Soviet of Nagorno-Karabakh defiantly voted to unite with Armenia on February 20, 1988 (considered the start of the 'Nagarno-Karabakh War'), the Soviet Union abrogated the region's autonomy on November 28, 1989, leaving its fate to the Azerbaijan S.S.R.

The Azerbaijan S.S.R. subsequently sought to stamp out Nagorno-Karabakh 'independence' by decree on August 27, 1990. Armenians living in the region defiantly declare independence on January 6, 1992. This step precipitated full-scale war between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

After a cease-fire was declared by Armenia, Azerbaijan and Nagorno-Karabakh on May 12, 1994 (called the Bishkek Protocol), the region was de facto separated out of Azerbaijan and swept under the tutelage of Armenia.

A two-day Azerbaijani offensive began on September 19, 2023 against the state of Artsakh which was followed by a cease-fire. After a few days of negotiation and a mass dispersal of people living in the region, the Artsakh government declared the dissolution of the Republic of Artsakh on September 28, 2023 and its dissolution on January 1, 2024.
