Description |
51-seat unicameral legislative body of Suriname.
On independence in 1975 the legislative body was known as the "Parliament of the Republic of Suriname".
After the February 25, 1980 coup led by Lt. Colonel Desi Bourtese, the Constitution was suspended and Parliament was inactivated a few months later on August 13, 1980. During this dictatorship period, all legal regulations emanated from a Military Authority.
A draft constitution was presented to the people for approval and ratified by referendum on September 30, 1987. Parliament was then renamed "The National Assembly of Suriname."
The first meeting of the National Assembly is held on the day its new Chairman (or President) is sworn in after an election.
