Almost 94 per cent of the population cited French as a mother tongue in the 2001 census, while less than three per cent cited English. Only 2.6 per cent are immigrants.

There was no change to St-Jean in the 2004 redistribution. The riding of St-Jean existed from 1867 to 1892. It was re-established in 1966 from St-Jean-Iberville-Napierville and Chateauguay-Huntingdon-Laprairie. The 1996 redistribution kept 94 per cent of the riding.
