Description |
This is a mixed urban and rural riding containing part of the regional county municipality of Le Haut-Richelieu and reaching south to the U.S. border. The major centres are St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, St-Luc and Iberville. CFB St-Jean is in this riding as well as a key customs office.
Manufacturing is the main industry, followed by retail trade. The average family income is $56,488 with unemployment of 6.7 per cent.
Almost 94 per cent of the population cited French as a mother tongue in the 2001 census, while less than three per cent cited English. Only 2.6 per cent are immigrants.
There was no change to St-Jean in the 2004 redistribution. The riding of St-Jean existed from 1867 to 1892. It was re-established in 1966 from St-Jean-Iberville-Napierville and Chateauguay-Huntingdon-Laprairie. The 1996 redistribution kept 94 per cent of the riding.
