Description |
This riding is in the southeast of Montreal on the southern shore of the St. Lawrence River. The riding contains the former city of Brossard in the north, the cities of Candiac and La Prairie and the municipality of St-Philippe.
The primary employment sectors are manufacturing and retail trade, followed by other services. The average family income is $75,190 and the unemployment rate is 5.8 per cent.
There is a significant non-francophone population and according to the 2001 census, only 66 per cent have French as their mother tongue. The total immigrant population is more than 20 per cent and almost six per cent cited Chinese as their ethnic origin. Almost 17 per cent have a university degree.
There was no change to Brossard-La Prairie in the 2004 redistribution. The riding of La Prairie was created in the 1966 redistribution from Chateauguay-Huntingdon-Laprairie, Longueil and Beauharnois-Salaberry. In 1996 boundaries were redrawn, part of Chateauguay was added and the riding was renamed Brossard-La Prairie.
