Description |
This riding covers the southwest corner of Saskatchewan. The South Saskatchewan River is the boundary in the northeast corner, and runs across the northern part of the riding.
According to the 2001 census, 65,216 people live here. Swift Current is the largest city; other communities include Assiniboia, Gravelbourg, Shaunavon and Maple Creek. Nearly one-fifth of the residents are older than 65. Fewer than four per cent are immigrants.
Agriculture is big business here, with farmers raising everything from cattle to spring wheat to specialty crops such as lentils and chickpeas. The Department of Agriculture's Swift Current Research Centre is an important facility here. Gas and oil production are also significant. Unemployment is just 2.8 per cent, and the average family earns $54,181 annually.
This riding was created in 1996, with most of its population coming from the old Swift Current-Maple Creek-Assiniboia riding. Further redistribution this year added about 1,800 people from Saskatoon-Rosetown-Biggar.
