Description This is a largely working class and industrial area of downtown Vancouver, home to the Downtown Eastside and North America's largest Chinatown. Vancouver Harbour is the north border; Cambie Street, Dunsmuir Street, Main Street, 2nd Avenue East and Ontario Street are the west boundary; 16th Avenue East, Knight Street, 15th Avenue East, Nanaimo Street and Grandview Highway are in the south; and Boundary Road lies to the east.

The 2001 census counted 107,421 residents. Of those, 44 per cent were immigrants. Twenty-eight per cent listed Chinese as their ethnic origin, and just 46 per cent called English their first language. Renters outnumbered homeowners 2 to 1.

The Vancouver East economy relies heavily on manufacturing and the accommodation and food service industries. Tourism is important, as are port-related industries. The average family income was $48,184 in 2001. Unemployment was 11.2%.

This riding was established in 1933 and only slightly altered in the 1996 and 2004 redistributions. Most recently, it lost about seven per cent of its previous residents while adding one per cent from Vancouver Kingsway.

Population: 107,421
