Description |
Autonomous region of Moldova methodized to reflect the predominance of the Gagauz people in the territory (officially described as a "Territorial Unit" or ATU in Chișinău in an effort to tamp down sentiment for outright independence). As the former Soviet Union began to disintegrate, Gagauz nationalists declared their independence from Moldova in August 19, 1990. The effort was annulled by the Moldovan government, which then enforced Gagauzia's integration into Moldova in 1994.
Gagauzia is overwhelmingly pro-Russia (in a referendum held in 2014, a large majority of Gagauzians opted for closer ties with Russia), and Russia has used this connection to intimidate Moldova, or it risks moves toward Gagauzian independence (especially if Moldova chooses to enter the EU).
