Easton was incorporated as a borough in 1789 and as a city on January 12, 1887.
It is a city of the third class under the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Effective January 31, 1972, Easton operates under the Mayor-Council Plan A (strong mayor)
form of government.
The mayor is the chief executive and administrative officer. City council, consisting of five
elected officials, serves as the legislative branch of the city government.
This form of government is provided for under the Optional Third Class City Charter Law,
Act 399 of 1957, P.L. 901, as amended.
City council meetings are regularly held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each
month, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Meetings are open to the public in City Council Chambers
in City Hall, located at One South Third Street, 5th floor.
