Description West Lafayette city government is divided between the Mayor and the Common Council. The Common Council holds the city legislative authority and makes the laws through ordinances, orders, resolutions and motions. The Common Council has final authority over the city's property, finances and the appropriation of monies. The Mayor presides at Council meetings and votes only in cases of a tie.

The Common Council regularly meets on the first Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall, and the session is broadcasted on cable T.V. All council meetings are public meetings and must be made public at least 48 hours in advance unless an emergency exists.

Traditionally, West Lafayette has several standing Common Council committees, each consisting of three council members. Each council member serves on several committees. The current standing committees are: Street and Sanitation, Planning and Zoning, Public Safety, Purdue Relations, Parks and Recreation, Department of Development, Personnel, Budget and Finance, Wastewater Treatment Utility, and Ordinance committee. These standing committees have only legislative functions including recommending legislation for consideration of the Common Council. The committees may hold hearings that pertain to possible future legislation and act as a liaison between the legislative and executive branch of city government.
