Description United Nations
Nations Unies
Naciones Unidas

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on January 1, 1942 gave the United Nations its name when the representatives of 26 nations met to declare a united front against the Axis powers during the second world war. After the Allied victories in 1945, San Francisco hosted the representatives of 50 nations to author the United Nations Charter.

On October 24, 1945 the United Nations was officially born as a legal global body.

The United Nations is comprised of six primary organs: Secretariat, Security Council, General Assembly, International Court of Justice, Trusteeship Council and the Economic and Social Council. The public face of the United Nations is the Secretary General and the President of the General Assembly.

The most significant source of power in the United Nations rests in the permament membership of the Security Council: United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia, China.

Flag Description:
The flag of the UN was adopted on October 20, 1947. The colour blue and the olive branches symbolize peace, and the map of the world represents the organization's global concerns.
