| Description |
One of the nine regions (or 'Kililat') of Ethiopia delineated by ethnicity. The Tigrayan people represent 96% of the population. Region also has the highest number of Orthodox Christian adherents in the nation at 95%.
State became the main beneficiary of financial largesse from Ethiopia's governing People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) after they captured the region in January 1991. It helped that the Ethiopian government was dominated by fellow Tigrayans.
Official language is Tigrigna. Capital is Mekelle
