Description |
One of nine regional states (or 'kililoch') created on the basis of a presumed common genealogy or common language by the revolutionist Ethiopian regime, a process which began on its assumption of power in 1991.
The Amhara people constitute 92% of the region's population. Orthodox Christianity is the predominant religion practiced by 83% of the people.
During the period of the Ethiopian Empire (a/k/a, Abyssinia), Amhara was its central part.
The capital is Bahir Dar.
