| Description |
One of nine regional states (or 'kililoch') created on the basis of a presumed common genealogy or common language by the revolutionist Ethiopian regime, a process which began on its assumption of power in 1991.
Afar was created as a homeland for the Afars, ethnic Cushitic peoples inhabiting the Horn of Africa (especially, Djibouti) Afar was once organized into independent kingdoms, each governed by Sultans.
Afar is the predominant language and 97% of the populace is Muslim. Capital is Semera.
