Description Region was created in 1929 as the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast within the Soviet Union to accommodate ethnic Pamiris, the local inhabitants. Pamiris from all over the Soviet Union were then forcibly repatriated to this region in the 1950s. Stirrings of independence incited civil war starting in the 1980s, with Gorno-Badakhshan declaring itself an independent nation in 1982. Massacres and pressure from the Republic of Tajikistan forced the new Gorno-Badakhshan government to back down, leading to a compromise in 1999, leaving intact for the region the 'Autonomous' designation.
