Description Self-governing territory under Pakistani administration. Territory was part of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir controlled by the British Raj between 1846 to 1947.

The last Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir temporized during a fight between Pakistan and India for his allegiance post-Independence in 1947. This led to an ambuscade on Jammu and Kashmir's western and northern districts by Pakistan-allied raiders, who then ceded these districts to Pakistan. The districts are presently named Azad (free) Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. Both districts are still considered 'disputed territory' by the United Nations.

Capital is Muzaffarabad
