Description |
The monarchy was first formed in 789 AD under Idris ben Abdallah (Idris I), the First Emir of Morocco and founder of the Idrisid dynasty. 1631 began the reign of the Alaouite sultans, officially inaugurated in 1666 by Sultan Al-Rashid (1666-1672). The reign of the Alaouite sultans (renamed the Alaouite kings of Morocco in 1957) continues to this day under the majesty of Mohammed ben Hassan, sworn in as King Mohammed VI on July 23, 1999. The king retains the authority to appoint and dismiss prime ministers and holds complete control over the armed forces and the judiciary as well as religious and foreign policy matters.
