32-seat upper chamber of the bicameral Congress of the Dominican Republic (Congreso de la República Dominicana).
Members are directly elected from voters in 31 provinces and the Distrito Nacional via the FPTP method. Members serve four years.
The body was established on November 14, 1844 as the "Conservative Council" consisting of five members. Members were elected indirectly every six years by the voters of each of the five Provinces of the Republic at the time.
On the 27th of February 1854, the name was changed to the "Senate" and given permanence by the Constitutional Reform of 1908.
