The Prime Minister is appointed by the president and serves at his pleasure. Position was known as Chief Minister from 1828 to February 1897 when Madagascar was known as the Merina Kingdom (1540–1897), then abolished. Position was re-instated for one year at the end of the Malagasy Protectorate (1897-May 27, 1957), abolished again during the Autonomous Republic (1958-1960), continuing to be so until the tail end of the Malagasy Republic (1960-1975). Post was re-instated as "Prime Minister" on January 11, 1976.
