Description |
Office established when the nation became a constitutional republic on September 24, 1976. First president was the country's Governor General, Sir Ellis Clarke.
Though the President is commander-in-chief of the Trinidad and Tobago armed forces on paper, the office only holds 'nominal' executive power under the constitution, and its duties remain mainly ceremonial. True power rests with the Prime Minister.
President serves for five years, renewable indefinitely.
