InfoDebra Markell is a life long resident of Queens, having grown up in North Flushing and currently residing in Whitestone.

Debra started her career in the private sector as a systems manager in the computer industry, working for a number of Fortune 500 companies. Since the early 90’s, Debra has been a strong community leader and activist. She served as the President of the Mitchell Linden Civic Association from 1994-1998 and is a member of the FDR Democratic Club, the Jefferson Democratic Club and the Eleanor Roosevelt Democratic Club. She also served as President of the 109th Precinct Community Council, as a Board Member of Community Board 7 and is currently the President of the Waterside Estates at the Cresthaven Homeowners Association in Whitestone.

Before becoming District Manager of Community Board 2, Debra Markell served as the Queens Borough Director in the Office of the Mayor’s Community Assistance Unit from 1998 until last year. The Community Assistance Unit (CAU) is often referred to as the “eyes and ears" for New York's many diverse neighborhoods to communicate with the Mayor’s office. As the Administration strives for a better quality of life for all New Yorkers, CAU often plays a pivotal role in that strategy. Through direct work with neighborhood groups and by fostering cooperation and coordination with various City agencies, they assist citizens in making New York City a better place. During her time at CAU, Debra was able to work on a vast array of community issues as well as bridging the gap between various communities, resolving constituent complaints and establishing initiatives in order to benefit Queens and the entire City. During her time at the CAU, Debra helped lead efforts to end graffiti in the community, worked tirelessly to get additional parking for local neighborhoods, and led efforts to increase truck enforcement throughout our community.

Currently, Debra is the District Manager of Community Board 2 in Queens serving the Woodside, Sunnyside and Long Island City Communities. Debra serves all of her communities with pride and dignity and looks forward to continuing to work together to improve the quality of our neighborhoods. In 2004, Debra was honored as the “Woman of Year” for the Little Neck Douglaston Memorial Day Parade, in 2006 received the Community Service Award at Transitional Services and this year received the Community Service Award from the YMCA of greater Flushing/Bayside. Debra currently lives in Whitestone Woods with her husband, Barry Kleinert.
