InfoBill Northey is a 46 year old corn and soybean farmer from Spirit Lake, Iowa. He has lived in the Spirit Lake area all his life. Bill is a fourth- generation Iowa farmer. He returned to Spirit Lake to farm with his grandfather, Sid Northey, after graduating from Iowa State University in 1981.

Bill uses reduced tillage, GPS, grid soil sampling and identity preserved production on his farm. Besides raising corn, soybeans and alfalfa and hogs and cattle through the years, he has been active in many other activities.

In 1995-96, Bill served as President of the National Corn Growers Association and as Chairman in 1996-97. He served as Vice President, as Chairman of the Government Relations Committee, the Market Development Committee and the Ethanol Sub-Committee. He served as representative to the Renewable Fuels Association, to the American Sugar Alliance and the US Feed Grains Council.

In 1997, he was selected for the Commission on 21st Century Production Agriculture, a group charged with making recommendations for a 2002 Farm Bill. He was appointed by Senator Lugar to the 11-member Commission.

Bill served on the Iowa USDA Farm Service Agency State Committee from 2001-2005. This Committee oversees the operation of the Farm Service Agency. This agency can provide over $1 billion of support for Iowa farmers in years of low prices or poor crop yields.

Bill is a Dickinson County Soil and Water Conservation District Commissioner. The District has been active is pursuing water quality in the Iowa Great Lake Watershed which includes Spirit Lake and East and West Okoboji.

Bill has been active in Farm Bureau. Bill’s grandfather, E. Howard Hill, was president of the Iowa Farm Bureau from 1947-1963. Bill has served in Farm Bureau offices at the county level, serving as President, Vice President and Voting Delegate and committee chairman of several committees. Bill also served on the State Resolutions Committee and on the Long Range Planning Committee for Iowa Farm Bureau.

Bill was Co-Founder and President of Innovative Growers, LLC (IG). IG is an organization hatched from ISU Extension Leadership. IG is a farmer-owned and farmer-managed group designed to capitalize on demand for the production of specialty grain products.

Bill is a board member of Ag Ventures Alliance and serves on several committees including the Legislative and Dairy Expansion Committees.

Bill graduated from Iowa State University in Agricultural Business in 1981. He was a member of FarmHouse Fraternity, serving as its President his senior year. Bill received a Masters in Business Administration from Southwest Minnesota State University in 2004.

Bill is a member of the Bennett Roundtable of the Farm Foundation. This is an agricultural policy discussion group of 180 national agricultural leaders who meet twice per year to discussion important agricultural policy issues.

Bill has traveled to view agriculture in many other countries. He has traveled to Taiwan, Japan (five times), Indonesia and Singapore (to the WTO Secretariat) representing Iowa farmers. He has also traveled to another 12 countries studying agriculture production and policy.

Bill has been involved in many political campaigns serving as manager or agricultural advisor for legislative and congressional campaigns. He has been a volunteer for many campaigns from local to national and has served on agricultural advisory committees for three congressmen.

Bill has been active in ad hoc advisory committees. He has served on Keystone Dialogues on Biotechnology and Trends in Agriculture, on the Pew Foundation Committee for Food and Biotechnology and on the Wallace Institute Project Advisory Committee.

Church life is important to Bill and his family. They are active members of the Faith Evangelical Free Church in Spirit Lake. Bill has served as Deacon, Sunday school teacher and committee chairmen for various committees.
