Born in 1947 in San Antonio, Texas, Edward C. Prado has had an extraordinary career in the law.

An Army Officer, A Public Defender, A Prosecutor
Ed Prado has both an undergraduate degree and a law degree from the University of Texas in Austin. Upon graduating from law school in 1972, Prado was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He continued to serve in the U.S. Army Reserves as an Infantry Officer until 1987.

Prior to becoming a federal judge, Prado worked in important positions on both sides of the criminal bar. First, he worked as an Assistant District Attorney for Bexar County, Texas. In 1976, he served in the Federal Public Defender’s Office in the Western District of Texas. In 1980, Judge Prado was appointed to serve as State District Judge in Bexar County, Texas. Just one year later, in 1981, President Reagan appointed Judge Prado to serve as United States Attorney for the Western District of Texas.



A Federal Judge for More Than 20 Years
In 1984, President Reagan appointed Judge Prado to the District Court for the Western District of Texas, where he served for nineteen years and won accolades from the lawyers who practiced before him.

In 2003, President George W. Bush nominated Judge Prado for the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. The Senate unanimously confirmed his nomination, with Senators from both parties expressing their support for Prado’s exceptional record and fair-minded approach.

Today, Judge Prado continues to serve on the Fifth Circuit.



A Person of Great Character
According to his official biography Judge Prado has also been actively involved in community and charitable affairs with organizations including: St. Mark’s Catholic Church, the Witte Museum Community Advisory Committee, the Philosophical Society of Texas, the Rotary Club of San Antonio and Leadership San Antonio. Moreover, Judge Prado is well-known in the San Antonio community for inviting school children to events in his courtroom and introducing them to the law.
