Info | Jim Tobin, Defender of Taxpayers' Rights
Like his running mate, Jim Tobin has built his career on keeping taxes and government spending under control.
Tobin is president of National Taxpayers United of Illinois, a leading taxpayer-advocate group devoted to lowering taxes, reducing government spending, and exposing government waste and fraud. No friend of politicians in Springfield, Tobin has received awards for his work on behalf of overtaxed Illinois residents.
Many Illinois voters remember Tobin as the Libertarian candidate for Governor in 1998 who was kept off the ballot on a legal technicality. The case, made controversial by the Ryan administration's use of state employees in Republican campaign-related activities, went all the way to the Illinois Supreme Court. The Tobin campaign collected more than the 25,000 signatures required to place him on the ballot, but state partisans used an obscure legal statute to invalidate some of the signatures.
