Terry Link is a senior Democratic leader in the Illinois Senate, representing the interests of his constituents Lake County. A respected legislator, he holds over a decade of experience working to make Illinois’ communities safer, stronger and more prosperous.
Senator Link was first elected to the State Senate in 1996, representing a majority of eastern Lake County. Today, he serves as the Illinois State Senate’s Majority Caucus Whip, Chair of the Senate’s Committee on Gaming and Vice-Chair of the Committee on elections. Link also serves as a member of the Committees on Financial Institutions, Judiciary and Local Government.
Link graduated from North Chicago High School and attended Stout State University in Wisconsin. Before moving into public service, he was a successful businessman as a partner at Major Industrial Trucking in Waukegan and Johnson Controls, where he worked in the governmental affairs division. Link learned the workings of Illinois government through his service with the Secretary of State and State Treasurer’s Offices.
Link’s legislative career has been described as a common sense approach to helping the people of Illinois. As a leader in the Senate he has been at the forefront of issues to promote a better economy for Illinois. Link has also passed legislation allowing increased homestead exemptions for veterans and seniors. He currently chairs Illinois’ Property Tax Reform and Relief Task Force, which studies Illinois property tax systems and investigates means of reducing the reliance on property taxes and alternative methods of funding.
A recipient of numerous awards from environmental organizations, Link’s record reflects his commitment to providing a safe and clean environment for all citizens. Link sponsored the Smoke Free Illinois to protect employees and residents of Illinois from the dangers of secondhand smoke. He has also passed legislation to reduce the health hazards posed by high emission vehicles.
Link also serves as Chairman of the Lake County Democratic Party a position he has held since 1992. During that time he has been successful in building the local organization into a large and progressive group that has made huge strides in representing an important collar county once considered to be heavily Republican.
In his community Senator Link is active in numerous organizations. He is President of Friends of the Genesee Theater, and a board member of Lake County First Tee. In addition, Link serves on the Foundation Board of College of Lake County and NICASA.
Senator Link lives in Waukegan with his wife Susan McCall Link and has four daughters: Lisa (Jeff), Leah (Tony), Kelly, and Jennifer (Craig) and two grandchildren Andrew and Abbe.
