InfoPeter Müller was born in the town of Illingen, Saarland, on 25th September 1955. After passing his final secondary-school examination at Lebach Grammar School he went on to study jurisprudence and political science in Bonn and Saarbrücken. From 1983 to 1986 he was a trainee lawyer and at the same time an assistant lecturer at the University of Saarland's Chair of Constitutional and Administrative Law II. Following his second law exam, Peter Müller worked as a judge, his last office being at Saarbrücken Regional Court. He was furthermore a lecturer at the University of Saarland.

After becoming a member of the "Young Union" in 1971, Müller's political commitment ensured his rapid establishment within its ranks. Having been actively involved for many years in the work of the Young Union's executive committee, at both Land and Federal levels, he was elected leader of Saarland's Young Unionists in 1983 - an office which he held until 1987. Müller had been a member of the CDU parliamentary party in Saarland's Land Parliament since 1990, initially holding the office of whip for a term of four years. On 12th April 1994, he then took over its leadership.

Peter Müller initially held the position of Grundsatzreferent [official for fundamental policy statements] on the CDU Land executive committee. In November 1995, an overwhelming majority elected him the new leader of the Saar CDU, an office in which he was confirmed in 1997, 1999 and 2001. Since November 1998, Müller has also been a member of the German CDU executive body.

In the Saarland Land parliamentary elections on 5th September 1999, the CDU – with its leading candidate Peter Müller – regained the absolute majority of Land Parliament seats for the first time in 14 years. On 29th September 1999, the Land Parliament - with its CDU majority - elected Peter Müller Minister President of Saarland.

Peter Müller is the ninth Minister President of the Federal Land of Saarland, which has roughly 1.1 million inhabitants and has experienced quite a turbulent history. Following the Second World War, the region was under French administration and did not become politically incorporated into the Federal Republic of Germany until 1957 (economically in 1959), subsequent to a referendum.

In his first policy statement as Minister President of Saarland, Müller announced that he was vehemently committed to changing the economic structure, an undertaking which would involve giving support, in particular, to the small and medium-sized companies. He also said that the mining industry was to be gradually replaced by the establishment of progressive, trend-setting enterprises from all economic sectors.

Leisure time for the 47-year old Peter Müller is spent with his wife and their three sons. Besides his love of sport, in particular as an active footballer, he also enjoys playing chess and skat. During his student days, he was a keen clarinettist and saxophonist. Peter Müller particularly cultivates a lively style of discussion in his political activities. Within the ranks of the CDU his straight and open manner, combined with his readiness to engage in critical debates, quickly earned him the reputation of the "Young Wild One", unafraid of confrontations with his own party.
