Born in Chowan County NC, 8/29/1810; eldest son of John & Mary R. Haughton
Graduated from the University of North Carolina 1832.
Read law with relative, Thomas B. Haughton in Edenton.
After being admitted to the bar, moved to Tyrrell County, where his parents had moved.
Moved to Pittsborough, Chatham County, 1837.
Purchased a plantation in Jones County and began practicing law in New Bern, 1857.
Married (1) a daughter of Robert Williams of Pitt County; (2) Eliza Alice Hill (1838); (3) Martha Harvey (1868), who died four days before he died.
