Info | Miller was a leader of the Whig Party in North Carolina.
Miller was born in Goochland County VA in 2/1814. His family moved to Raleigh in 1826. After graduating from the University of North Carolina in 1834, he became an attorney.
He was a delegate to the Whig National Conventions of 1844 and 1852 and then in 1848 was a Presidential Elector, voting for Zachary Taylor for US President and Millard Fillmore for Vice President. In 1852, Miller was a candidate for Presidential Elector on the Whig ticket (Scott-Graham).
During the Buchanan administration, Miller parted ways with his former political friends and rebelled against nativism. He gave a speech in which he stated his reasons for changing his affiliation (Raleigh Standard, 6/16/1858). Miller was appointed to serve as a candidate for Presidential Elector on the Democratic ticket in 1860 (Raleigh Register, 5/9/1860) but declined to run when the national party divided (Raleigh Register, 7/11/1860). By the fall, Miller had announced his support for Stephen Douglas for President and agreed to run as a candidate for Presidential Elector on the National Democratic ticket (Raleigh National Democrat, 9/15/1860). Miller died in 1862 at the age of 48 in his home in Raleigh.
