InfoKONO Taro was first elected to the House of Representatives in October 1996 and was re-elected in June 2000 and November 2003 from the 15th District of Kanagawa Prefecture. The 15th District consists of the cities of Chigasaki and Hiratsuka, as well as the towns of Oiso and Ninomiya, and has approximately 430,000 voters. His winning majority increased from 13,297 in 1996 to 63,058 in 2000 and 71,968 in 2003.

KONO is currently Assistant Secretary-General of the Liberal Democratic Party as well as Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party in the Kanagawa Prefecture. He is also the Deputy Chairman of the Party's Task Force on Consumer Affairs.

In the House of Representatives, KONO is a member of the Committee on Health, Welfare & Labor and of the Select Committee on the Constitution. He is also the Director of the House Special Committee on Youth Affairs.

A 1985 graduate of Georgetown University with a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service, KONOserved for Democratic Congressman Richard Shelby of Alabama, now GOP Senior Senator of Alabama, for two years.

Taro is the son of current Lower House Speaker Yohei Kono.
