During the Civil War enlisted in the Confederate Army as a second lieutenant in Company A, Forty-seventh North Carolina Regiment; promoted successively and became captain of the Fourth Company of Sharpshooters, MacRae’s brigade, Army of Northern Virginia, 1861-1865
After the Civil War Bunn studied law with his uncle William T. Dortch; was admitted to the bar in 1866 and commenced practice in Rocky Mount, N.C.

Candidate for alternate Presidential Elector 1868
Delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1875 and to the Democratic National Convention in 1880

Presidential Elector 1884; cast an electoral vote for Cleveland & Hendricks
