| Info | Senator Weinberg is the majority leader of the Senate. She joined the Senate Nov. 10, 2005, two months after her selection by district Democratic County Committee members to fill a vacancy and two days after being elected to complete the Senate term that began Jan. 10, 2006. She won re-election in 2007, 2011, 2013 and 2017. She had been a member of the Assembly since March 16, 1992. In 2009, she was the Democratic candidate for the newly-created office of lieutenant governor.
The senator co-chaired the Legislative Select Committee on Investigation that examined the unlawful closing of access lanes to the George Washington Bridge in September 2013.
Laws Ms. Weinberg has sponsored have generated more than $20 million for autism research, required insurance companies to pay for at least 48 hours of hospital care for new mothers, and lowered the legal alcohol blood level for drivers to .08. She also sponsored the law prohibiting smoking in indoor public places and workplaces, as well as the state’s anti-bullying law. She also sponsored legislation allowing lesbian and gay couples to marry.
The senator was born Feb. 6, 1935, in New York. She graduated from Beverly Hills High School. In 1956, she earned a B.A. in history and political science from the University of California. She has completed all coursework for a master’s degree in public administration at Fairleigh Dickinson University. She married her late husband, Irwin, in 1961, and they had two children, Daniel and Francine. The senator has two grandchildren, Shayna Iris and Jonah Benjamin.
Ms. Weinberg was an assistant administrator for Bergen County from 1975 to 1985, and a member of the Teaneck City Council from 1990 to 1994. Ms. Weinberg is a member of the New Jersey Historical Commission, the Legislative Services Commission and the New Jersey-Israel Commission. She has also been active in numerous community organizations including the Adler Aphasia Center, Shelter Our Sisters, the Bergen Family Center, Pam’s List, the Women’s Political Caucus, New Jersey Network of Women Elected Officials, and the National Organization of Women, the National Council of Jewish Women, and Hadassah. She is a member of Temple Emeth in Teaneck.
