InfoCongressman Jerry Moran represents the 69-county "Big First" District of western and central Kansas. First elected to Congress in November 1996, Moran has worked hard on behalf of Kansas. Kansans recognized Moran's efforts by electing him to a fourth term in 2002 with a record 91 percent of the vote.

Since arriving in Congress, Moran has been a champion of Kansas' small town way of life. He has led the fight to save rural hospitals by serving in leadership roles with the Rural Health Care Coalition (RHCC). In December of 2000, he was elected to a four-year term as the Co-Chair of that organization. He authored the Debt Down Payment Act, which ensures honesty in budgeting and preserves social security. In addition, Moran has strived to serve as an advocate on small business, agriculture, and education initiatives that affect "Big First" main street storefronts, farms and ranches, and working families.

Moran continues a long tradition of the "Big First" by serving on the House Agriculture Committee, which has oversight and authority over federal farm and food assistance programs. In January of 2003, Moran was selected to chair the Agriculture Subcommittee on General Commodities and Risk Management. Moran is also an active member of the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee and the House Veterans' Affairs Committee.

In addition to his committee assignments, Moran chairs the Rural Caucus Task Force on Telecommunications, is a member of the executive committee of the National Republican Congressional Committee and serves as an Assistant Majority Whip on the Floor of the House of Representatives.

Moran's service to the people of Kansas has been acknowledged through numerous awards and recognition. Moran has earned the "Friend of the Taxpayer," "Friend of the Senior" and "Friend of Rural Counties" awards as well as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce "Spirit of Enterprise" Award. He has been given the "Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award" from the Kansas Farm Bureau and his efforts to restore Medicare funding for small, rural hospitals earned him the "Top Legislative Award" from the National Rural Health Association.

In 2001 he was given the award for "Legislative Excellence" by the National Association of Manufacturers and received the "Presidential Award for Leadership" from the National Farmers Union. He has been honored as a trustee of the Eisenhower Foundation and for distinguished service to Fort Hays State University, where he serves as Adjunct Professor of Political Science. Congressman Moran also serves on the Executive Committee of the Coronado Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

A native Kansan, Moran was raised in rural, western Kansas and graduated from Plainville High School. He attended Fort Hays State University and later the University of Kansas where he completed degrees in economics and law. After an early career as a small town banker, Moran established a law practice in Hays and returned to Fort Hays State University as an instructor. Before his election to Congress, Moran served eight years in the Kansas Senate, the last two as Majority Leader.

Moran, his wife Robba, and their two daughters continue to live in Hays.
