Info | 17th century Quaker leader in England.
Born on 8/14/1644 according to the Julian calendar and 10/24/1644 according to the Gregorian calendar.
Penn helped to establish the independence of the jury in English / US jurisprudence in the Penn-Mead trial in 1670.
While serving in jail awaiting the trial, Penn authored the book _No Cross, No Crown_, his most famous work during his lifetime.
Helped Edward Byllynge to organize the colony of West Jersey 1675-78
Campaigned for Whig candidates for Parliament in 1678-80 because they supported freedom of religion
Received a charter from King Charles II for the colony of Pennsylvania and served as the Proprietor 1681-1712. As Proprietor/Governor, Penn purchased land for European settlement from the Indians, drafted a Frame of Government which guaranteed freedom of religion, and lost all his money when the settlers in Pennsylvania chose not to pay him quitrents, a type of annual rent for using land.
Penn died on 5/30/1718 OS = 8/10/1718 NS.
First Appeared on a United States Postage Stamp in 1932.
