Info | Matthias Platzeck was born to a doctor and a medical technician in Potsdam on 29 December 1953. From 1960 to 1966, he attended primary school in Potsdam. From the 7th grade until his Abitur (upper secondary leaving certificate) he attended the Erweiterte Spezialoberschule (upper secondary school) of Kleinmachnow. After that, in 1974, he did his military service at the National People's Army (NVA). From 1974 until 1979, he studied biomedical cybernetics at the Illmenau Technical University and graduated as engineer (Dipl.-Ing.). From 1979 to 1980, Matthias Platzeck was assistant lecturer at the Institute for Air Hygiene in Karl-Marx-Stadt (Chemnitz); since 1980, director of economics and technology at the district hospital Bad Freienwalde. From 1982-1990, he worked as head of the department for environmental hygiene at the hygiene inspection of Potsdam. At the same time (1982-1987), he did postgraduate studies for environmental hygiene at the Academy for Medical Further Training in Berlin.
Together with like-minded people, Matthias Platzeck founded the AG Pfingstberg and the citizen's action group ARGUS (Working Group for Environmental Protection and Urban Planning), in April 1988. In November 1989, he supported the foundation of the Green League. As spokesperson of the Green League, he took part in the negotiations at the Central Round Table of the GDR. From February 1990 until April 1990, he was minister without portfolio in the Modrow government.
At the general elections in March 1990, Matthias Platzeck won a seat for the Green Party of the GDR. He was parliamentary secretary in the parliamentary group of Alliance 90 / the Greens and one of the 144 members of parliament of the new federal states who were sent as delegates to the German Bundestag after Germany's reunification.
As a result of the regional parliamentary elections in the federal state of Brandenburg, Matthias Platzeck took up a seat in parliament for the parliamentary group of Alliance 90, on 14 October 1990. On 22 November 1990, he was appointed Minister for the Environment, Nature Protection and Regional Planning for Brandenburg.
From 1991 unti 1993, he was member of the federal speakers' council of Alliance 90, but did not support their unification with West Germany's Greens. He was again appointed minister in 1994. In 1995, Matthias Platzeck joined the SPD.
In managing the great flood at the River Oder in July/August 1997, Matthias Platzeck has rendered his country great service. From 1991 until 1998, he was member of the Federal Council representing the German states. Since June 1998, he has been member of the Land's executive committee of the SPD. On 14 June 1998, Matthias Platzeck was nominated for the office of lord mayor of Potsdam by the SPD. On 27 September 1998, he was victorious with a vote of 63,51%. He has been mayor of Potsdam since 4 November 1998. Since 8 December 1999, he has been member of the federal executive committee of the SPD. On 8 June 2000, he was elected chairperson of the SPD of Brandenburg.
On 26 June 2002, Matthias Platzeck was elected chief minister of the the Federal State of Brandenburg.
